Amazon now has seven ‘Just Walk Out’ stores in the UK and the big grocers are trying to catch up.
Tesco launched its own version of Amazon’s Just Walk Out shopping experience last month, retrofitting a Tesco Express in Holborn with cameras on the ceiling and on-shelf weight sensors so customers can “walk right out” after selecting goods from the shelves. Amazon just opened it’s seventh ‘Just Walk Out’ store right opposite the Tesco store!
Aldi is planning to launch a checkout-free store, in Greenwich, southeast London. Morrisons is working on a checkout-free store at its headquarters in Bradford
Sainsbury’s is preparing to launch a checkout-free, ‘Smartshop Pick & Go’ store in Holborn Circus, London. From what they have said, it looks to be a very similar solution to Amazon, Tesco etc.
Bloomberg, citing a person familiar with the matter, reported Sainsbury’s supplier to be Amazon, in what is the company’s first known customer outside the US for the technology that powers its Amazon Fresh stores.
